To an avid angler, the fly fishing vest is a lifeline to the sport as well as to comfort and convenience. Most would rather lose a pole than their fly fishing vest and everything they have attached to it or buried inside of it. Most also put a lot of thought into buying their fly fishing vest with the hopes that the fish will also be duly impressed enough to just surrender to the expert fisherman in the water.

When choosing a fly fishing vest remember you will be spending a lot of time in the water so you will want to make sure it is short enough not to drag into the water and will keep everything to hold dear out of the water and dry. Also, consider the size of the vest and the weather conditions in which you will most likely be exposed. If you are going to be fishing in cooler weather, you will want slightly larger than you would normally wear to allow for layering of additional clothes.

Color is another consideration when choosing your fly fishing vest. Although there are two basic colors, buy a tan one if it will match the color of the foliage around which you will be fishing. If most of your excursions will be in lush lands consider buying a green one to better blend in with your surroundings.

You will need to consider the number of pockets on the fly fishing vest and think about how much you want to carry around with you all day long. Keeping in mind that the more you carry the more it will weigh. You may want to pick a fly fishing vest with fewer pockets to reduce the urge to carry more stuff just because you have the room for it. They should also have easy access flaps as most times you will be opening and closing them with one hand. Velcro fasteners seem to provide the easiest access into the pockets.

Make sure the fly fishing vest you choose enables you to move easily especially after you load it down with all the necessary accessories. If it is too tight or too heavy you may have trouble with your casting movements and, since you are going fly fishing, casting will be what you do the most. If necessary, leave some of the equipment in the car and make your trip more bearable.
